I wake to the sounds of a text message on my phone.

Thank you for coming to the ball with me last night. It is one of many nights with you that I will never forget. I’ll be over to pick you up at one.

My eyes glance up on my phone to look at the time, shocked to see that it’s nearly midday already. Boy, can I sleep these days. I text him back quickly to let him know that I am looking forward to it, too, then focus on getting ready.

I’m in the middle of applying the last touches of my makeup when the doorbell rings. I quickly run to the door while I’m trying to get Jake’s earring in, and when I open it, I nearly gasp. Wearing a thick cream shirt with beige trousers, Jake is hotter than ever. He’s gelled his hair some, the spikes at the top his head standing up that little bit more. His eyes are glowing, taking in every inch of me as well.

“You look amazing in that dress,” he remarks before leaning in for a kiss. He loops his finger under the strap of the floral dress I ended up choosing.

“Thank you. You look great yourself,” I reply, perhaps a little too hungrily.

“Don’t start, Ana, or else I’ll never get you to lunch. And you look like you need to gain a few pounds.”

Oh, bother, little does he know. I will be shortly … with a vengeance.

We get to Reston in about twenty minutes, and La Bistro is heaving with people enjoying the autumn sun. We take a table inside for a change where we sit in silence for a few minutes, gazing over our menus.

“Hi, how y’all doing? What can I get to drink for you today?”

Oh, great, it’s her. Miss Drooling into Her Bloody Panties is here again. This is going to be fun.

“I’ll have an orange juice,” I declare loudly to pull her attention away from Jake. She nods absentmindedly in my direction then turns back to Jake again, smiling. She’s seriously ignoring my presence, making it obvious that she’s leering. It’s rude. I have this sudden urge to shout, “Hello! He has a date with him. Back off, bitch.”

“I’ll have a Bud please,” Jake requests, smiling up at her.

She flutters her eyelashes back at him, doing everything she can to gain his attention. Finally, she saunters off, albeit rather reluctantly.

“You don’t want any Pinot? I know you like to have a glass or two here at times.” I’m still scowling at the waitress as he asks.

“No, I’m fine, thanks,” I respond through my teeth.

“What’s wrong? You seem agitated about something.” He almost seems amused as if he already knows what’s wrong.

“I’m fine as long as people stop being arseholes,” I reply a little too aggressively.

“Arseholes? Hmm, the potty mouth has returned.”

I smirk, my anger completely erased. The way Jake said arsehole instead of asshole has the giggles consume me.

“See, that’s better,” he nods triumphantly. “Who's being an ‘arsehole’ anyway?”

“No one.
